How to calculate your marketing budget for ads

The math uses three numbers: how much each contact costs, how many contacts become clients and how many clients you want. With them, the budget stops being a guess.

Budget = desired clients ÷ close rate × cost per lead
  1. Set your goal for new clients per month. Think about what your schedule or operation can handle.
  2. Find your close rate. Count the contacts you got in a month and how many became clients. At 20%, you need 5 leads for every client.
  3. Use the cost per lead for your industry. Start with the market average and swap in your real number after the first weeks of campaigns.

Example: for 5 clients per month, with a 20% close rate and leads at $47, you need 25 leads. The ad budget comes to about $1,175 per month.

How much does a lead cost by industry

The starting values the calculator uses are averages from real campaigns published by LocaliQ and WordStream. Here is the average cost per lead for each industry and channel:

When an industry only has data for one channel, the calculator uses that channel. For house cleaning, the Meta report has no dedicated category, so we use "Home & Home Improvement" as an approximate reference. The Google figure for cleaning comes from "Cleaning/Maid/Butler Services" (April 2024 to March 2025).

These are averages from US advertisers, and your cost may be higher or lower. For real estate on Meta, another dataset (Superads, worldwide, July 2025 to June 2026) shows about $29.50 per lead, more than double the LocaliQ average, so it is worth tracking your real number. Lead-form leads on Meta usually have less buying intent than people searching on Google, so the close rate tends to be lower on Meta. QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What should my monthly marketing budget be to get clients?
In digital marketing, your ad budget depends on how many new clients you want per month, the cost of each lead and your close rate. The formula is: budget = desired clients ÷ close rate × cost per lead. For example, for 5 clients per month with a 20% close rate and leads at $47, that is 25 leads and about $1,175 of ad budget. Use the calculator above with your own numbers.
What is cost per lead (CPL)?
It is how much you pay, on average, for each person who leaves their contact details after seeing your ad. Divide the amount invested by the number of contacts received. If you invested $1,000 and received 25 contacts, your cost per lead was $40.
How much does a lead cost on Facebook, Instagram and Google?
It varies a lot by industry and channel. According to the 2026 LocaliQ and WordStream reports, a real estate lead costs on average $13.74 in Meta lead campaigns and $102.51 on Google search. For beauty and personal care, it is $50.91 on Meta and $39.25 on Google. Across all industries, the average is $27.39 on Meta and $66.69 on Google. These are market averages, and your real cost may be different.
Does the calculator work for my industry?
The calculator covers 21 industries with real market data, such as real estate, cleaning, beauty, dental, legal, remodeling, insurance and restaurants. If your industry is not listed, choose "Other industry" to use the overall average and replace the cost per lead with your real number.
Does the ad budget include Alfa Branding management?
No. The ad budget is paid directly to Meta or Google, in your account. Campaign management is a separate service. The calculator only shows the estimated result of the ad budget.
Which close rate should I use?
Use your own. Count how many contacts you received in a month and how many became clients. If you do not have that history yet, the calculator starts at 15% for real estate and 20% for other industries. WordStream cites 20% to 30% as a general consensus for close rates and 10% to 20% in real estate, but these are broad references, not a measured average. Adjust the number and see how the result changes.
